Van Eck Emerging Markets Investment Team Photo

Van Eck's emerging markets investment team seeks secular growth trends, such as domestic consumption, that contribute materially to the economic health of the emerging markets. The strategy often results in a portfolio of small- and mid-cap stocks. David Semple, a veteran of emerging markets investing, is the Fund's portfolio manager, and he is supported by analysts Angus Shillington and Ed Kuczma.

  • Joined Van Eck in 1998.
  • As Director of International Equity, is responsible for asset allocation and stock selection in global emerging markets; also serves as portfolio manager of Van Eck Emerging Markets Fund and Van Eck VIP Emerging Markets Fund.
  • From 1996 to 1998, served as sub-advisory co-portfolio manager of Van Eck VIP Emerging Markets Fund at Peregrine Asset Management.
  • From 1993 to 1998, a regional strategist at Peregrine Brokerage.
  • Prior to 1993, Head of Emerging Markets at Murray Johnstone, a United Kingdom investment management company; also an investment manager specializing in Asian equity markets.
  • Member of Association of Investment Management & Research since 1993.
  • Ranked among top Asia strategists by Institutional Investor, 1996.
  • Bachelor of Law with Honors, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, 1985; post-graduate work, 1985-1986.

  • Joined Van Eck in 2009.
  • Serves on emerging markets team with a broad focus on global emerging market equity investment strategies.
  • Prior to joining Van Eck, served as Head of International Equity for ABN AMRO, responsible for restructuring Asian and European equity cash and derivative distribution to North American institutions.
  • Earlier career experience includes several senior roles in research sales, trading, sales trading and portfolio management with a focus on the Asian and European markets for BNP Paribas, UBS Securities and Hill Samuel/BLW in offices based in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Edinburgh.
  • Holds FINRA Series 7, 9, 11, 24 and 63 licenses.

  • Joined Van Eck in 2004 as fund administrator for international portfolios.
  • Currently serves as investment analyst for Van Eck Emerging Markets Fund and Van Eck VIP Emerging Markets Fund with a specialized focus on the Latin America and Emerging Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regions; also serves on committee that reviews managers and mandates for a multi-manager absolute return strategy.
  • From 2006-2008, served as portfolio manager of Market Vectors ETF Trust, responsible for the Trust's equity portfolios in direct reporting line to the head of the Market Vectors ETF business.
  • CFA charterholder; member of the New York Society of Security Analysts and member of Global Association of Risk Professionals.
