Trends with Benefits #18: Taylor Schulte on Retirement Planning

14 July 2020

In this episode, I catch up with Taylor Schulte, Founder & CEO of Define Financial in San Diego. Taylor is a millennial who has built a retirement and tax planning practice for people over 50 years old. He’s also a master marketer. We have a wide ranging conversation that covers not only planning ideas for people working towards retirement but also modern marketing ideas for business owners like himself.

Modern Marketing

The business of financial advice, more than anything, is a relationship business. It’s important to find the right fit for both client and advisor. This is something we talk briefly about in the podcast. Still, finding those relationships is an important goal for any business. Perhaps one of the benefits of being a young financial advisor is having a handle on modern marketing tactics. This may be as simple as having an effective website or trying a new medium like podcasting. Taylor is also not above trying ‘old school’ methods like postcard mailings. These are ideas and experiences he freely shares with other advisors in his podcast Experiments in Advisor Marketing. As he acknowledged in our discussion, content marketing is an important long-term trend that business owners, financial advisors and others need to figure how to incorporate into their strategy.
