Trends with Benefits #45: The State of Public Markets with Hope Jarkowski

17 February 2021

In this episode I speak with Hope Jarkowski, Head of Equities for the New York Stock Exchange about the state of public markets and the role exchanges are playing to improve access and opportunities for investors.

The Importance of Public Markets

The number of publicly-listed companies has steadily declined since peaking in the late 1990s. Given the principles of investor protections, the rigor and the transparency required to become public, it should give one pause to think about where else individual investors are forced to seek investment opportunities and about the nature of companies that have gone public in recent years.

Hope shared her thoughts about the regulatory developments that have made it easier to stay private and thus, have created a bifurcation of access that leaves retail investors on the sidelines. As the newly appointed Head of Equities at the NYSE, Hope speaks about her mission of envisioning new pathways to public markets. We discuss recent developments regarding direct listings and the rise of SPACs.

A frequent topic of discussion these days in investment circles is ESG. Hope speaks to the role exchanges have here as well, particularly in the area of governance.
