VanEck Vectors Mortgage REIT Income ETF

  • Mortgage REITs have sold off more than the market and are approaching the drawdown levels of the 2008 real estate bubble.
  • The sell-off has been driven by a combination of widening mortgage spreads which have hit book values and, at times, elevated repo rates.
  • The Federal Reserve (the “Fed”) has stepped in with mortgage-backed securities (MBS) purchasing and has been supportive of the funding markets.
  • Valuations are far lower than at the beginning of the year and yields are at 2008 levels, yet there haven’t been signs of the trouble in the housing markets that drove the 2007/2008 sell-off. However, there have been a rash of dividend cuts/suspensions due to liquidity concerns with several mortgage REITs.
  • Mortgage REITs performed well in the years following the last time the Fed stepped in with MBS buying in 2009-2010.

Fund Description

The VanEck Vectors® Mortgage REIT Income ETF (MORT®) seeks to replicate as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MVIS® US Mortgage REITs Index (MVMORTTG), which is intended to track the overall performance of U.S. mortgage real estate investment trusts.
