Investing in Defense More Topical Than Ever, With Keynote Address by Peter van Uhm
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the topic of defense has come to dominate the headlines. For investors, the ESG rationale of excluding weapons is gradually changing to ensuring security. More and more professional investors have now added defense as a sector in their investment policy. We would therefore like to take you into the world of the defense industry and cordially invite you to an interesting afternoon with fascinating speakers at the National Military Museum in Soesterberg on Friday, 5th July 2024. Peter van Uhm, for example, will take you through the importance of defense as an essential component of states to defend against aggression. Hans Huigen will briefly discuss the developments he sees within NIDV member companies following the invasion of Ukraine and the violence in the Middle East. Roel Houwer will conclude the day by explaining how VanEck set up its Defense strategy and how controversial weapons are handled.

Peter van Uhm
Former Dutch General
Peter van Uhm is a Dutch off-duty general. Between 2005 and 2008, Van Uhm was commander of the Land Forces. That same year, he was appointed commander of the Armed Forces and his son, first lieutenant Dennis van Uhm, was killed in Uruzgan by a roadside bomb attack at the age of 23. Peter van Uhm will discuss the importance of defense for countries to be able to defend themselves against aggressors.
Hans Huigen
Director of the Dutch Defense and Security Industry Foundation (NIDV)
Hans is Director of the Dutch Defense and Security Industry Foundation (NIDV). The NIDV is the link between companies, knowledge institutions and the government. Before that Huigen was the head of EU and Public Affairs at Royal IHC, which also performs tasks for the Dutch Ministry of Defense. In his earlier career he was involved in various roles within the ministry of Economic affairs, the OECD and Essent.
Roel Houwer
Senior Product Manager, VanEck
Roel Houwer is Senior Product Manager at VanEck Europe and is responsible for generating analysis and research to provide investors with insight into VanEck's investment strategies and how they can be effectively applied in the investment portfolio. In addition, Roel contributes to the development of innovative investment products and investment strategies. Previously, Roel was Senior Equity Strategist at PGGM and Senior Portfolio Manager at Northern Trust Asset Management. Roel holds a master's degree in Finance from the University of Groningen (RuG) and a postgraduate master's degree from the University of Amsterdam (VU).
