I am pleased to be joined by VanEck’s Ola El-Shawarby, Senior Analyst for the active Emerging Markets Equity Strategy. We discuss Ola’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia where she witnessed reforms stemming from Vision 2030, a plan that seeks to decrease Saudi’s economic dependence on oil. Ola outlines potential investment opportunities in the entertainment and tourism industries that may arise from these economic reforms.
Also notable were the social reforms she saw that supported female empowerment. These included a relaxed dress code for women as well as increased female employment. For instance, Ola encountered a female Uber driver, significant in that women in Saudi used to be banned from driving, so the idea of earning income from this activity seemed unthinkable. Lastly, Ola discusses geopolitical risks within emerging markets.
