Trading volume is one of the main indicators used to judge how easily an ETF can be bought or sold. Broadly, it tells you how actively a fund’s shares change hands and that, in turn, is a useful signal of liquidity and of the costs an investor is likely to face when trading.

What Exactly is 30 Day Volume?

The 30-Day Volume is the average number of shares traded per day over the most recent 30-day period. Rather than relying on a single day, which can be unusually quiet or unusually busy, it smooths activity into a rolling average, giving a more representative picture of how heavily a fund normally trades. As a rule, the higher and steadier the 30-Day Volume, the deeper the fund’s liquidity. That tends to mean tighter bid-ask spreads and a lower cost of entering or exiting a position.
